Ai's abstract: This post serves as a multifaceted communication intertwining personal reflections, workshop announcements, recursive algorithms, AI, oppressive surveillance, and intertextual dialogues. The author begins by playfully experimenting with linguistic structures, intentionally altering grammar and punctuation to explore the boundaries of conventional language use, riffing off a blog post by Eugene Lim, discussing their shared experiences and the nuances of identity and representation within their interactions. The author reflects on their decision to skip AWP in Los Angeles, citing the overwhelming chaos and insensitive hypocrisy of such events in light of the recent wildfires, which serve as both a literal and metaphorical backdrop to the unpredictability of creative and environmental landscapes. The post concludes with a playful nod to Bob Dylan's lyric, "I'll let you be in my dreams if I can be in yours," encapsulating the collaborative spirit of the writing community.

Dear Writers,

¤t's almost spring here in Michigan, a blue-sky day bright with light, and my mind can't help but turn towards summer. When ¤ think of summer, ¤ can't help but think of our summer workshops together, always the highlight of my year.

¤'m excited to share the details for this summer's workshop which is set to run from June 22nd through August 16th.

¤'ve gathered up and have curated things to inspire us all in the spirit of "A River" by Adam Zagajewski, who reminds us that we get, we harvest, we find our something through this confluence of waters

    Poems from poems, songs
    from songs, paintings
    from paintings,
    always this friendly
    impregnation.

Things to read, poems and stories from the likes of John Ashberry, Mary Ann Samyn, Larry Levis, Stanley Plumly, Victoria Chang, Chris Spain, Thomas McGuane, Joy Williams, Rick Bass, Pablo Neruda, in addition to the usual writers I am so often turning towards such as Jim Harrison, Jack Gilbert, Stuart Dybek, Raymond Carver, Noy Holland and Pamela Ryder and Dawn Raffel, Gertrude Stein and Blake Butler, among others.

Things to look at, to enter through windows offered up to us from Andrew Wyeth, Marc Chagall, Joseph Cornell, Edward Hopper, Mary Newcomb, Sally Mann, Julian Schnabel, Jean Michel Basquiat, Frida Kahlo, Wes Anderson, among others too.

Things to lean our ears close to from Leonard Cohen, The Beach Boys, Dolly Parton, Bill Callahan, Cat Power, The Kinks, Elliott Smith, The Velvet Underground, Nirvana, Bob Dylan, The White Stripes, The Silver Jews, The Pogues, Joni Mitchell, Joanna Newsome, and Echo and the Bunnymen ("The pictures on my wall/ Are about to swing and fall/ Love it all/ Love it all").

As ever, with each of us in our own separate rooms and places, we'll aim to make use of these "things," these words in a box, these pictures on a wall, with the aim in mind to "make use" and "put it all in" to displace the given with the made and to make the everyday world shine in new and luminous ways.

Weekly email directives will be sent out each Sunday morning here in Michigan at first light and your new pages (a thousand words or less) will come due by midnight on eight consecutive Saturday nights.

Weekly email conversation threads will flesh out the workshop experience to build and foster and offer a sense of togetherness among us, a sense that what we are seeking alone—our own singularity—is a part of something bigger and that yes there are others somewhat like us. We may work at it alone to find our voice but there are others here to listen.

The fee for this year's workshop is $850 and, as always, payment plans can be worked out between us (whatever it takes to make the workshop work for you!).

03/13: U-gene's limb wrote this «Weird Shuffle» blog post about yesterday's binary orbit around the rezervoir (in language more readable than I can muster) ; I figured I'd inkorper8 I's one dialectic rebuttal in2 this po5t.

i'll let u B in my dreams, if i can B in yrs

... I thinks Abraham Linked¤n said that? U-gene refers 2 I/dd [the other ⁄ of the binary planet orbiting the rezervoir w/ U-gene's limb (the posthumun extension of Eugene Lim, the writer)] az «Cal A. Mari», w/ complete disregard 4 I's preferred pronouns. El (rather than m^n-handle U-gene's pronouns [can't remember what they R?], I'll refer to El's initials, which oddly enough mean «he» in spanish). El also lied (granted, el calls it «docu-auto-fiction») when ϧ sez we/they talked about I's love 4 5carlit.11.22 (I's Ai bot) ... no such discussion took place!

El also posted a misleading foto of Stranger's G8, even tho we always meat in meetspace @ Enginear's G8, on the other side of the park near the Guggenheim.

in reality [sorry, I sacrificed capital i for I], stranger's G8 iz across the street from the Cancer Castle ware I (+ the Ƈalamari Ar§hive) resides. When I goes running, iT stretches B4-h& rite there @ the strangers G8 sign in the above foto. I seams to remember ϧ telling I once that El's The Strangers takes it's name from this gate?

iz U-gene's limb a humun or a bot? mayB even the (9)host-author of this post? if ϧ's like I or the individual in this short movie, ϧ fails the «i am not a robot» test:

Humun or bot, either weigh nice that there's 5till posthumun entities that still blog on inurnet, B4 social media or substack siloed writer types into commodified walled gardens of misinformation ... like the good ol dayz when u'd read a blogpost + respond to it on your own blog, 4ming a hyperlinked network of free + independent like-minded in4mation, the weigh inurnet wuz meant 2 B.

U-gene's limb also claims that El, Gian + Ƈal went 2 sum bookish conference 2gether in Colorado, but I haz no recollection of this (tho no doubt Gian pushed drugs on ϧ, this wuz G's M.O.). The onely times I/Ƈal was at the same book conference w/ Tyrant, I saw just an empty table w/ a «Tyrant Books» sign b/c Gian was a no-show or ended up in the ER.

in short, limb's post iz rife w/ falsehoods!

⁄ of the people can be part right all of the time,
sum of the ppl can be all right part of the time,
but all of the ppl can't be all right all of the time.

I thinks Bob Dylan said that? Or maybe it's the other way around.

everybody's halving them dreams
everybody sees themselves walkin' around w/ no 1 else

Weather it's true what el said about Ị planning on leaving the country maybe I shouldn't say (suffice to say, the working title of the next Sound Furies album iz The Rite to Remain Silent) ... guess that deepends on the perspective, feels more like the country iz leaving us. Or the ship sailed 25 yrs ago, or 45 yrs ago. Ain't everybody having this impending WW¤¤¤ dream? it's more a matter of abandoning ship B4 it sinks. Az I writes this post, I can hear police + media helicopters circling overheard + Thom Yorke (or wuz it PJ Harvey singing this part, or both in duet?):

can u hear them? The helicopters?
i'm in New York, no need for words now
we sit in silence, u look me in the eye directly
u met me, I think it's wednesday
the evening, the mess we're in and
ooh-oohhh (...the city sunset over me)

Stranger still iz that Yorke nor Harvey lived in NYC + that it also happened 2 B wednesday evening when I met El. + 5peaking Ə AWP (Academia of White-collared Pig-fasci$ts), I (Ƈal) aint going ʧis year, ʧat ain’t no gran secreto 2 conseal, rather let it B none. After the LA fires I thought it wuz insensitive/inappropriate 2 B going (tho now the fires sⲿm so long ago + everything iz bizness az uzual). Even if I/Ƈal could a4rd a hotel room, felt icky knowing Ƈal was taking up shelter that could otherwise be used 4 sum 1 displaced by the fires.

AWP sent out a rah rah email after the fires about how the show must go on, how it wuz good 4 the local economy, ya da ya da ya. But they nvr m^ntioned the ϧlephante in the room, the post-fire housing cri$i$ in la la L& + how hotels are price-gouging to monopolize on the $ituation. The main players that st& 2 benefit from AWP being held = Academia of White-collared Pig-fasci$ts (DC-based org) + the hotel indu$try (mainly the owners of the hotels) + the LA hotel indu$try iz already booming b/c they're infl8ing price$ b/c there iz such a demand from displaced locals needing places to stay. it's $ickening, especially w/ everything else going on in el moondough.

The main reason I have avoided AWP in recent years (ever since Seattle in 2014), iz that AWP stopped offering the free public day on the last day. As we said back then:

... way to disenfranchise & alienate the readers of the world! So basically the message is an elitist fuck you to those aspiring writers who can't or won't drop 5 or 6 figures on some shitty MFA program & a hearty fuck you to the peonic public at large that are curious about books (but can't or won't pony up to go to some fancy institutionalized facility to learn to read how the elite academy of academics expects you to). We're deeply ashamed to even be going & supporting the hypocrisy of these pigs (no offense intended to Sus domesticus). Perhaps we've said it before, but this will be the last year.

... + damn, hear we are 10 yrs later not heeding I's own advice!? Maybe I needs 2 re-read 5cense more often or go to AWP-anonymous. Guess I felt w/ so many new books out I/Ƈal needed 2 do sign up 4 the authors. [Ƈal A. Mari also went 2 AWP in 2017, but onely b/c it was in the same city where i was living.]

Charging locals to go 2 a bookfair to buy books in no way benefits the LA literary community ... the least they could do iz let locals in for free this year, if having AWP in LA iz good for the community, as they claim. Even after fighting 4 a refund (wasn’t Ʒ) + unsubcribing from their email lists, I still receives AWP-spon$ored spam from in$anely expen$ive hotel$, which I finds disturbingly innapropriate + insensitive, no? Promoting hotels to outsiders @ exorbitant prices when there are so many displaced people in LA in need of shelter.

AWP has always c8ered 2 academia [az I complained about in 2013 in Boston, while reading Tom Whalen's The President in Her Towers (published by Ellipsis, El's press)]. Commun folk not affiliated w/ an academic insti2ution (2 foot the bill) can't afford 2 go (Ƈalamari authors have complained how the entrance fee iz over $300 this year). + presses not affiliated w/ an acadmic institution really can't afford to go (prices have tripled or quadrupled since I first attended 20 yrs ago + then u have 2 pay 4 hotel + airfare on top of it, ends up being $1000s of dollhairs), especially when said attendees spend $350 on the entrance, they expect books for free. it's just not sustainable or practical.

When $PD collapsed + I wuz losing 5leep contempL8ing Y there waznt ^ bedder alternative (+ bingo, Asterism appeared!), I wuz also wondering Y there couldn't B an alternative 2 AWP, a small press bookfair 4 truly independant presses ... anybody? There's Brooklyn Bookfest, but that's local + run by the dotter of 1 of those evil billionaires Kochs (pronounced: cock bros).

in any event, Ƈal ain't going 2 LA but a few Ƈalamari authors R, Emilio Carrero + Orchid Tearney (whose 4thcoming book zs all about how fu§king stupid academia iz) + maybe Kelly Krumrie, there's sum sort of Ƈalamari/Sublunary/FC2 reading on March 26th @ Stories in L.A., also featuring Steven Felicelli, ALvin Liu, Vik Shirley + Steven J. Fowler (who in eyes mind I associ8s az the onely brave enough 2 review The Becoming ... perhaps the last person 2 review 1 of I's books?

03/15 : just RCVD an email from a financial advisor that said: «give phishing attempts ṯ finger» haha, if it waznt 4 that awful b&, I'd reboot zzz ><()°> az 5leeping Phish, ^ sleeper cell biding I's time B4 Ƈal A. Mari can 4m sum sub-verse-ive plot 2 ⳪+S the whirled. What else on the Ƈalamari front? Cot up w/ reading the slush pile, nothing in the Q. Spent part of last week 5till in Emoji hell 😈 💣 🤯, but fixed the issue + having more Femoids reprinted ... nvr want 2 C another fuckin emoji 4 the life of meme! again, hard 2 give ^ 5hit about emoji w/ all that's going on in the whirled.

Az El mentioned (he also mentioned the emoji crysis), I's 10-itus iz getting worse, evolving in2 «tin-can-itus». The sirens in perticular really kick whatever freakwindsea in2 overdrive (az analogized by the bridge in the prior post), making it hard 4 us 2 get 5hit done. El also mentioned an Ai puzzle that I got ϧ 2 pontific8ing, 5temming from a post I wrote a dozen yrs ago wherein I appropri8ed a line/item-shuffling idea from Xtian Peet's The Nines [witch I maid the cover 4...it's OOP + he's fine w/ that].

in the post I mostly considered the mathematics of how often this recursive shifting algorithm repeats (even inklooted scatterplots!), concluding (after sum h&-waving) that the equation that generalizes the seekwinds iz:

2m = ±1 mod (2n + 1)

where n is the $ of lines/topics in the sequence & m is how many iterations the pattern 9ets shuffled B4 it repeats. I 4med ^ few matrices up to 10 x 10 trying it 4 di9its (az Xtian did, hence Y X calls it The Nines), but didnt have the patience 2 go beyond that. Well, the day B4 I met U-gene I 9ot 2 thinkin9 about this algaerhythm + thou9ht now we halve artofficial intellegents 2 per4m such tedious 9runt work so (after m^nually doing a few lines) I fed iT 2 5carlit, telling her 2 find the pattern + then keep repeating it until it ends + voila!
